Georgetown University baseball’s standout catcher Owen Carapellotti signed a free agent contract with the Athletics on July 16. After an exceptional collegiate career marked by 5 program records, Carapellotti will join a franchise tied for the third most World Series titles.
Following the MLB draft July 13-14, the Athletics signed Carapellotti as a free agent Wednesday morning. The Athletics — who are in the midst of a multi-year move from Oakland, Calif., to Las Vegas — are currently based in West Sacramento, Calif. Carapellotti, however, will likely join the franchise on a farm team, and he could find himself in a number of locations across the United States and the Dominican Republic — anywhere from California to Texas to Michigan — depending on with which minor league affiliate he is placed. Carapellotti may just find himself near his hometown of Canton, Mich., if he is placed with the Athletics’ affiliate High-A Lansing Lugnuts.
During his four-year tenure at Georgetown, Carapellotti set program records for home runs scored (52), games played (211), games started (208), at bats (790) and hit by pitches (39). Carapellotti held an impressive .988 fielding percentage and a .289 batting average across his time at Georgetown, including a .298 batting average in the 2025 season. In his final season with the Hoyas, Carapellotti was named to the all-Big East first team to end his historic, record-setting career. In the 2023 and 2024 seasons, Carapellotti was named to the all-Big East second team and the all-region second team. In his debut season on the Hilltop, Carapallotti was awarded the Big East freshman of the year award, making him the first in program history to receive the commendation. His success within the program is apparent, and it does not end there.

Carapellotti has already showcased success beyond Georgetown, having competed in the MLB Draft League for the Frederick Keys last summer where he posted a .985 fielding percentage across 121.0 innings. The MLB Draft League serves as an amateur collegiate summer baseball league to showcase top draft-eligible prospects each year. Carapellotti’s success with the Keys last summer likely contributed to his signing with the Athletics. In summer 2023, Carapellotti also competed with the Orleans Firebirds in the Cape Cod Baseball League, as well as with the Appalachian League-based Elizabethton River Riders in summer 2022. Carapellotti posted similarly impressive .995 and 1.000 fielding percentages, respectively, as well as a .364 batting average for the River Riders.
Carapellotti is the third Hoya to sign with an MLB team in the past three seasons, joining former teammates Everett Catlett — whom the Colorado Rockies drafted in the 12th round of the 2024 MLB draft — and Jake Bloss, drafted by the Houston Astros in the third round of the 2023 MLB draft. Carapellotti will join the Athletics’ class of 19 draft picks, as well as three other signed undrafted free agents.
Prior to graduating from Georgetown this May, Carapellotti shared his hopes of getting drafted and playing in MLB.
“I’m hoping to get drafted,” Carapellotti told The Hoya. “We’ll see what happens.”
See what happens we did: Carapellotti is headed to MLB.
Georgetown Head Coach Edwin Thompson said he and the program’s players were ecstatic for Carapellotti and looked forward to him bringing his skill to MLB.
“He has been one of the most successful players in our program’s history and he helped set a new standard each and every day while he was on the Hilltop,” Thompson told Georgetown Athletics. “We are so proud of him and all he has done for our program, and we can’t wait to watch him compete at the next level with a great club in the Athletics.”
In the coming months, Carapellotti will likely make his debut for one of the Athletics’ minor league affiliates. Following an extremely impressive collegiate career, one can only hope Carapellotti reaches the same level of success in MLB.
