Amanpour to Address SFS Commencement

A doctor, an economist, a business executive, two journalists and two scientists will speak at this weekend’s commencement exercises, which begin today with the ceremony for the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.

Joseph E. Stiglitz, the 2001 Nobel Prize winner for Economics, will address the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at 3:30 today. Stiglitz, a professor of economics and finance at Columbia University, served as Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers for two years during the Clinton administration and was also Chief Economist of The World Bank from 1997 to 2000.

Undergraduate ceremonies begin tomorrow morning with the College’s commencement at 9 a.m. Rita Rossi Colwell, the chairman of Canon US Life Sciences, Inc., will address Georgetown College students and faculty on Healy Lawn. As director of the National Science Foundation from 1998 to 2004, Colwell helped establish support for initiatives such as nanotechnology, biocomplexity and information technology. Colwell is currently working to develop an international network to tackle issues involving infectious diseases and water.

Christiane Amanpour, CNN’s chief international correspondent, will address the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service at 2:30 p.m. on Healy Lawn. Amanpour, who has reported from global hot spots such as Iraq, Afghanistan, Somalia, Rwanda and the Balkans, has been awarded a News and Documentary Emmy, two George Foster Peabody Awards for distinguished achievement and meritorious service, two George Polk Awards for journalistic integrity and superb reporting, and a Courage in Journalism Award.

Former U.S. Surgeon General David Satcher will speak at the School of Nursing and Health Studies’ graduation ceremony in Dahlgren Quadrangle at noon. Satcher served as the Surgeon General from 1998 to 2002, after directing the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry.

Catherine R. Kinney, President and Co-Chief Operating Officer of the New York Stock Exchange, will address the McDonough School of Business at 5:30 p.m. on Healy Lawn. After joining the NYSE in 1974, Kinney oversaw trading floor operations and technology and also worked as group executive vice president, before assuming her current position. She also co-chairs the NYSE’s Management and Operations Committee.

The Georgetown University Law Center and the School of Medicine will hold their ceremonies on Sunday.

The New York Times’ Supreme Court correspondent, Linda Greenhouse, will address Law Center students on Sunday at 2 p.m. on Healy Lawn. Greenhouse won the Pulitzer Prize for beat reporting in 1998 for her coverage of the U.S. Supreme Court, which she has reported on since 1978.

Robert L. Carter, U.S. District Judge for the southern district of New York, will receive an honorary degree. As General Counsel for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, Carter argued many cases before the U.S. Supreme Court, including the famous Brown v. Board of Education decision that outlawed segregation in public schools.

Anthony S. Fauci, who has served as director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at the National Institutes of Health since 1984, will address the School of edicine Sunday at 11:15 a.m. in Constitution Hall. He is a key adviser to the White House on global AIDS issues as well as efforts to enhance the public health preparedness against bioterrorism. His research interests include infectious and immune-mediated illnesses and sickness as a result of bioterrorism, autoimmune disorders, asthma and allergies.

Professor emeritus of Medicine at Georgetown, Donald M. Knowlan, will receive an honorary degree.
