Big East Foes Overpower Georgetown

It’s just like in quicksand: The more you struggle in the Big East, the deeper you sink.

And the Hoyas just seem to be sinking further and further.

Georgetown (2-11, 0-4) suffered its fifth defeat in a row at the hands of Big East rivals Villanova (10-3, 3-1), which trampled them 6-3 last Wednesday. Last Friday, the Hoyas fell 6-1 to No. 3 Connecticut in College Park, Md.

The Wildcats drew first blood in the 13th minute, when junior forward Allison Boris passed the ball to sophomore midfielder Emily Donaldson, who tapped it into the back of the net for the lead.

Villanova had to wait till the 28th minute to score their second goal, which was followed by a third just two minutes after. Both goals were assisted by senior midfielder Stephanie Campbell, who first laid out a pass to freshman forward Lauren Wuzzardo and then to another freshman forward Sam Haas who each finished her chance and put Villanova up 3-0.

The Hoyas managed to pull to within one at the 35-minute mark, when the trio of sophomore midfielder Willemijn Wijsman, senior defender Lauren Sheets and goal-scoring junior forward Maggie Farrand used a penalty corner to their advantage and put the ball in the back of the net.

The action-packed first half included 15 shots on goal from Villanova and mere four from Georgetown, while the Wildcats’ freshman goalkeeper Maura McCormick saved one and conceded one, compared to the Hoyas’ junior keeper Deirdre Crovo who was kept busy by saving six and conceding three.

The Hoyas were determined to score early in the second half, and found hope with a 41st minute goal by sophomore forward Lindsay oramarco, who nudged in a cracking pass from Farrand beyond the keeper, taking the score to 3-2.

But that was the closest Georgetown got to catching up with Villanova, as the Wildcats eventually shook the Hoyas off and left them in their wake as they snatched two fast goals in the 56th and 57th minutes. The fourth Villanova goal came off the stick of Haas, who grabbed her second of the match off an assist by Wuzzardo and soon after, Donaldson tipped in a corner taken by Campbell past Crovo into the net.

The Hoyas struggled to get back in the game, and in the 60th minute, freshman forward Micaela O’Toole finished off a solo effort to take the score to 5-3, but her goal was cancelled out three minutes later by Wildcats freshman midfielder Ally Smith, who was aided by sophomore defender Steffi Caniglia, who finished off the game and gave Villanova a decisive victory over Georgetown.

Even though the Villanova game tallied yet another loss into Georgetown’s season record, the team can take heart from the fact that it was their highest scoring game in the past eight games played, and take that into its next game against Lafayette College.

Senior forward Lizzy Peijs was Connecticut’s player of the match, notching up a hat trick of goals in the fourth, 10th and 13th minutes in addition to her first minute assist to junior forward Lauren Aird.

Connecticut held out to their 4-0 lead through the rest of the first half, threatening the Hoyas relentlessly with their 24 shots at goal to rival just one from Georgetown. Crovo put on a plucky performance with her 10 first-half saves, while her counterpart sophomore goalkeeper Andrea Mainiero was not tested even once.

Two minutes into the second half, Connecticut reopened their goal-scoring account as Aird assisted freshman forward Melissa Gonzales for the Huskies’ fifth goal, followed by a 43rd minute solo effort by junior midfielder Lindsey Leck, putting the game far beyond the Hoyas’ reach.

The Hoyas will face the Leopards on Sunday, Oct. 14 in Easton, Pa., where they will attempt to break their chain of defeats.
