Club Softball Overcomes Challenges

For several years the Georgetown softball team has hoped to reach varsity status, but for the 2004-05 season it remains a club sport.

The season opened Sunday with two losses in a doubleheader against the Prince George Community College varsity squad. The team is looking forward to a tournament at the College of New Jersey the weekend after Easter break.

According to club president Lauren Camp (MSB ’06), the team has no seniors, so she was initially worried that it would be a rebuilding year. But Camp said that she expects the squad to be consistently competitive this season.

Club softball faces numerous challenges at Georgetown, including that there are few real softball fields close to campus. The team must travel long distances for their games, making it difficult for fans to attend. Camp said that she is searching for field space in downtown D.C. or in Maryland in order to attract more Georgetown fans to games.

Several players, including pitcher Lacey Campbell (MSB ’07), shortstop Maggie Siller (SFS ’07) and third baseman Stephanie Sartori (NHS ’06), look to be exciting players to watch this season. There is also plenty of new transfer and freshman talent, Camp said.

Camp said that the team usually practices a few blocks off campus at Volta Field on 34th and Volta Streets on Tuesdays while Thursdays are usually spent in batting cages on campus.
