University officials shut down the lower level of the Leo J. O’Donovan, S.J., dining hall Tuesday after heavy rainfall onday night and Tuesday morning caused leaks and flooding in the downstairs dining room.

Karen Frank, vice president for university facilities and student housing said that facilities management met Wednesday to come up with ways to minimize damage from leaks.

“Additional exterior drains are being installed, and we want to ensure that the drains stay clear,” she said. “Part of the problem was from the volume of water that came all at once.”

Frank said that while carpet did not need to be replaced, the damage was significant “to the extent that we had to bring in carpet cleaners to help clean and dry the carpet.”

The O’Donovan Dining Hall reopened yesterday.

Monday’s storm also caused leaks and minor flooding in some apartments in Village A and Henle.

“There were places where water came in under doors or through windows,” she said. Frank said that facilities crews were working to identify possible leaks or areas that could sustain water damage.
