The Georgetown track team split up into three squads this weekend, sending athletes to Florida, Stanford and George Mason and returning with several NCAA, IC4A and Big East qualifying performances.

In Florida, junior Kandance Ferguson headlined the team performance, earning a trip to the NCAA regional meet with her fifth-place finish in the 400-meter dash in a time of 54.56.

“Kandance keeps getting better and better. I think there’s definitely more in her,” said Ron Helmer, director of track and field and cross country.

Ferguson joined juniors Nana Hanson-Hall and Nichole Torpey and sophomore Ashley Hubbard for the 4x400m relay. They also qualified for the NCAA regional meet in a season-best time of 3:40.97.

Monica Hargrove, assistant coach and recent Hoya track alum, won the 400m dash as a participant not affiliated with Georgetown, racing to a swift personal-best time of 51.95.

Junior Elizabeth Maloy and the freshman Ogrodnick twins, Avril and Lise, all qualified for the Big East in the 1500m, finishing third, sixth and seventh.

In the field events, junior Ashley Mondie scored a conference-qualifying mark of 38 feet 7.5 inches in the triple jump.

On the men’s side, senior Stanley Lagrenade was the sole individual champion for the Hoyas as he won the 800m run. He crossed the line is a personal-best time of 1:50.61, good for the IC4A.

“Stan did a real nice job, and it was his best race ever,” Helmer said.

Lagrenade came back to aid the men’s 4x400m relay to a third-place finish in a season-best time of 3:14.10. Seniors Chris Bonner and Jared Jenkins and junior Kevin Ward joined to earn an IC4A qualifying time.

Freshman Kenny Mitchell qualified for the Big East in the 100m dash with a time of 10.70 and for the 200m dash with a 21.85 clocking. The shorter sprint also qualifies him for the IC4A championships.

Fellow freshman Terrell Gissendanner qualified for the Big East in two events, including the long jump with a leap of 22 feet .25 inches. Senior Jesse Patterson soared 21 feet 11.5 inches in the same event to qualify for the Big East as well.

At Stanford, two Hoyas posted NCAA regional qualifying times in the 10,000m race. Senior Rod Koborsi ran to a third-place finish in a highly competitive field with a personal best time of 28:32.49. With this time, Koborsi breaks his own school record of 28:35.86, set last year at this time. This is also an automatic qualifying mark for Koborsi and the third-fastest time in the country.

“Rod ran a great race. He started out relaxed and just kept moving up throughout the race and finished with a strong last mile,” Assistant Coach Pat Henner said.

Back closer to Washington, at the George Mason Invitational, the Hoyas earned a handful of Big East qualifying marks.

Freshman Buky Bamigboye claimed two first-place finishes in the 400m hurdles and in the 4x400m relay. Freshmen Charlena Tillet and Claire Buckley and junior Jayne Penn joined Bamigboye to win the relay in a time of 3:55.75.

Freshman Khyle Osbourne, meanwhile, finished fourth in the shot put.

“This point in the season, people start doing what they’re supposed to be doing and things start to come together as more people qualify for the championship meets,” Helmer said.
