Fordham Players to Watch

Xavier Martin

artin is a sophomore running back out of Staten Island, N. Y. While he is a bit small compared to many other running backs, Martin was still named the 2007 Patriot League rookie of the year, and he has since moved into a starting role on the team.

artin’s best attribute is his ability to find the end zone. In the 10 games he played last year, he scored eight touchdowns, a team best. In fact, in his first game he rushed 25 times for 157 yards, the second best mark for a Fordham freshman. This season, he has found pay dirt seven times, averaging just over 100 yards per game rushing.

artin does not pose much of a threat in the passing game, where he has only seven receptions through nine games, but if the Hoyas want to take down Fordham, they are going to have to shut down the running game, which lands squarely on the shoulder pads of Xavier Martin.

James Crockett

Crockett, a junior, assumed the role of captain this year.

Crockett had his breakout year in 2007, starting in all 12 games as an outside linebacker. He was third on the team in tackles, had three picks and also recovered a fumble. Against Holy Cross last season, he recovered a fumble in the end zone for a touchdown and sealed the win with an interception, earning him top defensive honors for the week.

This season, Crockett is second on the team with 57 tackles and has made his presence known in the passing game. When Crockett blitzes, he gets to the quarterback – he has two sacks and 7.5 tackles for a loss already this season. When he drops back into coverage, he is just as dangerous, breaking up five passes and intercepting one.

Georgetown’s quarterbacks will need to keep an eye on Crockett whenever a pass play is called.
