Georgetown Co-ed Sailors Qualify for Nationals

Georgetown’s co-ed sailing team placed second overall during a series of regattas at the MAISA Team Race Championships on April 10 in New York, qualifying them for the ICSA Team Race National Championships to be held in Texas in June.

Georgetown finished just behind the team from Hobart College during the regatta.

This is the sixth consecutive year that Georgetown’s co-ed team has qualified for nationals.

Later that day, during a separate regatta at Washington College in Chestertown, Md., the Hoya women placed third behind Washington College and Navy.

Junior Andrew Campbell, a member of the co-ed team, said that the squad was happy to have had success.

“It’s exciting for the co-ed team to make it to the championships,” he said. “Now the other teams need to concentrate on making it to their national championships.”

Over the course of the sailing season, which began in February, Georgetown’s teams have earned four first-place, three second-place and two third-place finishes.

They are also still among the country’s top squads according to national rankings released by “Sailing World” magazine on April 13.

Georgetown’s co-ed team is ranked fourth and the women’s team is ranked eighth, according to the rankings.

The Hoyas had previously been ranked third and seventh, respectively.

The Hoyas split up this weekend, with the freshmen racing in the AISA Freshmen event in Ithaca, N.Y. The women will race in the AISA Women’s event in Washington, D.C., while the rest of the team head to the Delaware Spring Open in Newark, Del.
