Georgetown Goes Down The American Way

The Georgetown women’s volleyball team trekked across town to American University’s Bender Arena for a non- conference game on Wednesday, falling in five sets 3-2 in a close match, 6-15, 9-15, 16-14, 15-9, 10-15.

The Hoyas seemed outmatched in the beginning of play, dropping the first two games by substantial margins. After edging American in the third game 16-14 with the help of strong blocking, the Hoyas pummeled the Eagles to take the fourth set victory. The Eagles finally pulled away to win the match by five points.

Though the Hoyas’ hitting percentage of .099 was rather low compared to their team average of .222, junior outside hitter Yulia Vtyurina tied a match-high with 20 kills. The Hoyas also dominated at the net, overpowering the Eagles in team blocking, 21-13.

For the first time since Oct. 7, senior team captain Kiran Gill returned with limited play. She turned in 14 digs, three kills and an ace.

Liu says she will be able to get more playing time in this weekend’s two conference games after a few days rest.

Freshman setter Jennifer Ward tied the match-high with three aces, despite a nagging knee injury that has prevented her from practicing. Sophomore middle blocker Anna Kliensorge turned in a solid defensive performance, with10 solo blocks and 16 assists.

The loss drops the Hoyas’ overall record dropped to 15-10. The Eagles improved to 21-4.

Now the Hoyas turn their attention to their two important conference games this weekend at home. They play St. John’s Nov. 4 and Connecticut Nov. 5, both which are tied with Georgetown for one of the four spots in the Big East Tournament.
