Georgetown Strong In Weekend Regatta

This past weekend, both the men’s and women’s crew teams competed at separate competitions. The men’s team had a very successful competition at the Jesuit Invitational Regatta at Cooper River, N.J. against teams from Fordham, Loyola-Baltimore, Boston College, Holy Cross, Fairfield and St. Joseph’s. The women raced on the Schuylkill River in Philadephia, Pa., against the Naval Academy and the University of Pennsylvania.

The women’s competition consisted of five races, with boats from Georgetown competing in four of the five. The conditions at Schuylkill River consisted of a 10-15 mph headwind following the current. The first and second Varsity Eight for the Hoyas both placed third in separate races with times of 7:08.6 and 7:53.0 respectively. In the Novice Eight races, Georgetown’s first Novice eight placed third with a time of 7:23.5, and in the second Novice Eight race, the Georgetown A team placed second with a time of 7:27.1 and the Georgetown B team placed fourth with a time of 7:53.1.

The Georgetown men’s crew team dominated the regatta at Cooper River with outstanding performances. The conditions at the invitational made the water choppy, due to a 10-15 mph cross-tailwind. The men’s Heavyweight Varsity Eight took home first place with a decisive 14 second victory and a time of 5:58.82. The A team from the Men’s second Varsity Eight won its race with a strong time of 6:14.53, with the B team following close behind in third with the time of 6:41.62. Both the A and B boats in the men’s lightweight competition combined for a one-two punch taking first and second respectively in the en’s Lightweight Eight race. The Men’s Freshman Eight and Second Freshman Eight both won their heats with times of 6:17.32 and 6:44.28. Both Hoya four-person boats took second in each of their competitions.

Overall, the Georgetown men’s team combined to win the regatta and the Cannonball Point Trophy of the regatta with a total of 68 points. St. Joseph’s took a close second place with 60 points, and Boston College took a distant third with 28 points. The en’s Varsity Heavyweight team next competes Sat.
