Georgetown Takes Eighth At Annapolis Regatta

This past weekend, the Georgetown coed sailing team raced at the Truxton Umsted Intersectional Regatta in Annapolis, Md., which is hosted by the United States Naval Academy. Of the 20 teams competing Georgetown placed eighth overall with 462 points.

The College of Charleston won the event with 320 points, while Queen’s University and Old Dominion University finished second and third with 355 and 356 points respectively.

Georgetown had four fleets sailing in the regatta, one in each of the four divisions. Each division raced 13 times throughout the weekend, in light conditions with 2-6 knot southeasterly winds on Saturday and blustery 20-25 knot northeasterly winds on Sunday. Georgetown’s “B” division team had the best finish for the Hoyas. The fleet of sophomore Ken Ward, juniors Curtis Flood and Leah Williams took an outstanding second place with 72 points.

In the “A” division, the Hoya sailors were able to come away with 11th place; the fleet of junior John Camera, sophomore Brian Bissell, senior Gavin Weiss and senior Baye Emery combined for 123 points. Georgetown’s “C” division competitors, junior Ryan Costello and freshman Tyler Haskell, also put in a good effort and came out of the weekend with 12th place in their division with 146 points.

Finally, the “D” division fleet made up of freshman Bill Jorch and senior Raoul Magana finished in ninth place overall with 121 points.

Georgetown entered the meet ranked third in the Sailing World College Rankings.

This coming weekend the Hoya sailing team will compete at several regattas including the Southern New England Team Race, Old Dominion University Team Race, the MAISA/SAISA Intersectional, the University of Maryland Spring Open and the Atlantic Coast Singlehanded Championships. Georgetown sailing has also extended a formal invitation to all alumni to race at the Annual Alumni Regatta on Saturday, May 12, at the Washington Sailing Marina from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
