After last season’s second-half surge, the Georgetown’s tennis teams looked to establish themselves as serious contenders against tough competition as the men played at the University of Virginia Fall Invitational and the women faced off at the Towson 4+1 Invitational over the weekend.

The women’s team opened up play against St. Joseph’s University on Friday. The Hoyas exhibited their sheer dominance from the beginning with sophomore captain Alex Sebia and freshman partner Michelle Brown allowing their opponents just one game in a 6-0, 6-1 victory. The wins continued as each woman took her match in straight sets.

The next round of play was the toughest that the team would face, playing against St. Mary’s. Sophomore Caroline Kuehn and freshman Aileen Shea both dropped their matches in three tough sets.

The team came roaring back, however, with the freshmen Jacquie Harrison and Brown sweeping their matches in straight sets, each recording a bagel set of 6-0.

Sophomores Maxi Thiels and Sebia rounded out the victory repeating the previous day’s score of 6-0, 6-1 to give Georgetown the 3-2 win over St. Mary’s.

The team continued to shine, and the women would be undeterred in the quest to sweep the tournament. The freshmen continued their strong form through the day’s matches as Brown and Harrison each took their singles matches by a score of 6-2, 6-1. Sebia sealed the victory with another 6-2, 6-1 victory to go with her doubles victory of 6-1, 6-0.

Over the weekend, the women recorded seven 6-0 sets. The Hoyas were led by the strong play of the newly acquired freshmen who were a combined 6-1.

The men’s team was unable to enjoy the same success as the women did. The Hoyas went against some of the toughest competition they will have to face off against all year in Virginia. The UVA tournament featured seven nationally-ranked singles players and four nationally-ranked doubles teams.

A new face, graduate student Ned Samuelson, provided the Hoyas with their strongest showing, losing 7-6, 7-5 in the class “A” singles bracket. The rest of the team played in the various other brackets but were unable to earn a victory in their opening and consolation matches.

The Hoyas hope for a better result as they play the Georgetown Classic this upcoming weekend. The women are on the road next weekend as they will play at the University of Maryland Invitational.
