GU Bestows Top Awards

Georgetown will honor five alumni and one faculty member for their lifelong service to the university and the community on Saturday.

The 2001 John Carroll awardees include University President Leo J. O’Donovan, S.J., who according to the release, has recruited top faculty members and initiated Georgetown’s largest fundraising effort to date – the $1 billion Third Century Campaign.

The other John Carroll awardees include Margaret P. Clark (F ’70), who in addition to being a volunteer for charitable organizations in Los Angeles, sat on the Alumni Association’s Board of Governors.

Joan M. Hart (G ’54), founder of the university’s Club of New Mexico, serves on the John Carroll Scholarship Committee as well as participating in the Sanctuary Movement, a group that provides amenities for Salvadorian and Guatemalan immigrants.

Kevin P. O’Brien (C ’65), of San Francisco, is the executive vice president of the Cox Television Independent Group and the vice president and general manager of a San Francisco Bay area Fox television affiliate.

Donald C Reynolds (D ’58, G ’61), an oral-maxillofacial surgeon, was named head of the dental department at Georgetown in the 1980s and also serves on the Alumni Board of Governors.

The 2001 Patrick Healy awardee, Francis X. Gagliano, is the current Track Coach Emeritus at the university. He served as Head Track and Field Coach at Georgetown from 1983-1999. Over 75 of Gangliano’s runners have earned Big East Academic All-Star honors – the most of any Big East school.

The awards ceremony, which will take place at the historic Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco, is part of the 2001 John Carroll Awards Weekend running from April 26-29.
