The Georgetown swimming and diving teams competed in the Patriot Invitational over the weekend, with the men’s squad pulling off a third place finish with 386 points, behind winner North Carolina and second-place George Mason. The women finished fourth overall with 305 points, behind George Mason, North Carolina and George Washington.

“Last year we had a good meet there. This year we had a great meet there,” Head Coach Beth Bower said. “Overall it was a very good meet for us. We probably could do a little bit better in our relays, but I was very pleased with individual swims.”

The men’s team was led by senior Chris Lengle, whose 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle performances qualified him for Big East Championships in February Lengle also finished third in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:44.40.

Freshman Brendan Griffen’s 16:29.52 smashed the Georgetown record of 16:38.21 in the 1650-yard freestyle set by Bill Basset in 1990.

“Brendan had truly an amazing meet,” Bower said. “He took five seconds off his best time in the 500 free and placed 13th and took seven seconds off his 400 IM time and placed sixth with a 4:13.29.”

Sophomore Shodai Enters, junior Jim McLaughlin and senior co-captain Will Miller joined Lengle to race for a fourth place effort in the 400-freestyle relay, with a time of 3:12.43.

Junior Bryan Evangelista finished the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:58.53 to earn fifth place.

On the women’s side, the Hoyas’ top performances came from freshman Michelle Herd, who qualified for the Big East Championships, placing fourth in the 200-yard backstroke in a time of 2:10.02, and senior co-captain Caragh Moynihan, who also earned a fourth-place finish with a 54.17 in the 100-yard freestyle. Freshman Diane Foglizzo swam a personal best in the 400-yard individual medley, with a time of a 4:38.96, breaking junior Lauren oynihan’s time of 4:42.53 set last season. Foglizzo’s performance was good for a sixth place finish. She also took fifth in the 200-yard individual medley and 11th in the 200-yard breaststroke.

Foglizzo joined up with senior Larkin Postles and juniors Liz D’Auria and Genna McKeel to take fourth place in the 400-yard freestyle relay, touching the wall at 3:40.03.

Both squads stand at 2-0 before they face off against Howard Dec. 1 at 1 p.m. in Yates Field House to round out first semester competition and head to Isla Morada, Fla., for winter training.

Until then, the Hoyas are preparing for Providence and Boston College in the second part of the season, which will test them before the league championships.

“Our goals are to qualify more people for the Big East and maybe one or two more people for the ECAC’s,” Bower said.
