GU Falters at Weekend Regattas

The Georgetown co-ed sailing team competed in two regattas last weekend, including a third-place finish out of eight teams at the Aaron Szambecki Team Race Regatta, hosted by Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va. At the Lynn Marchiando Team Race Regatta in Boston, Ma., the Hoyas finished fifth out of 10 teams.

The Hoyas entered Sunday’s final round in first place with a record of 12-2, but they lost all three of their races in the finals to finish 12-5. Hobart William Smith won the regatta with a record of 14-3.

Georgetown competed without senior Andrew Campbell in the final round because he had to attend to another commitment.

“With Andrew there we did well, but we had some trouble putting it all together on Sunday. There was a lot of room for improvement,” Head Coach Mike Callahan said.

In their fifth-place finish at MIT, the Hoyas won only three of nine races in Saturday’s first round, but they qualified for the finals by winning Sunday’s round robin of the bottom six teams. In the final round, Georgetown went 2-3 to finish with seven total points. The University of Rhode Island won the regatta with 14 points.

“We lost to some teams we should have beaten, but we sailed much better on Sunday,” Callahan said.

The Georgetown co-ed squad will next compete at the MAISA Team Race Championship on April 8. The women’s team will also hit the water on April 8 for the Washington College Women’s Regatta.
