GU Finishes in Top 25 of NCAA

On the heels of a strong performance at NCAA Regionals last week, Hoya cross country quietly concluded its 2006 season at yesterday’s NCAA Championships.

The women finished 16th and the men 24th among the 31 participating teams.

The Stanford women and Colorado men took the national titles, with 196 and 94 points, respectively. Junior Melissa Grelli and senior Elizabeth Maloy had the strongest finishes for the Hoyas, placing 39th and 44th, respectively, with times of 21:30.6 and 12:34 against the best runners in the nation. Grelli and Maloy have finished as Georgetown’s top two in every meet in which they’ve run this season.

Juniors Jennie Funk and Maggie Infeld were the next finishers for the Hoyas, completing the 10,000-meter course in 110th and 129th places with times of 22:12.6 and 22:21.8. Sophomore Natasha LaBeaud (22:55.1) rounded out the Hoya scorers with a 154th-place finish.

On the men’s side, juniors Andre Laboy (32:44.0) and Justin Scheid (32:46.1) finished in 116th and 118th place, topping the Georgetown finishers.

Senior Brian Dalpiaz was the next Hoya to finish, crossing the line in 129th place with a time of 32:52.2.

Junior Michael Banks (33:08.1) and Senior Matt Debole (33:34.7) rounded out the top five scorers with their 158th- and 187th-place finishes.

While half of the Georgetown team was competing at the NCAA championships, another group of Hoyas competed at the ECAC/IC4A Championships in the Bronx, N.Y. The women finished in seventh place at the contest, while the men did not bring enough runners to place.

Georgetown junior red shirt Brandon Bonsey, however, impressed with an 11th-place finish. He clocked in at 25:29.6 for the 8,000m course.

On the women’s side, freshman Renee Tomlin continued her impressive freshman campaign by taking 20th place, and a time of 18:37.7, over the 5,000-meter course. Fellow freshman Lauren Gregory (18:43.2) followed in 26th place.

Sophomore Kailin Collins and senior Nana Hanson Hall were the next Hoyas to finish, earning times of 19:12.6 and 19:16.0. While they finished with respective places of 46th and 49th, freshman Amanda Walsh (19:42.6) rounded out the ECAC scorers with a 72nd-place finish.

Some of Georgetown’s runners will continue into the winter indoor track season but the meet was the last of the year for the cross country squad.
