The Georgetown University Alumni and Student Federal Credit Union will donate the $15,491 it has collected to aid victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund, CEO and chairman Chris Villar (MSB ’02) said.

Since the collection was established Sept. 14th, GUASFCU has gathered donations from at least 230 members, totaling $7,745. According to Villar, the credit union matched 100 percent of its donations.

“Our [total] far exceeded what I would have expected,” he said. “This has showed how everyone got behind doing what was right.”

“The Georgetown community made a commitment to the people who needed help,” Villar added.

Students could donate by filling out a form in the credit union lobby in the Leavey Center or by completing a form online at GUASFCU’s Web site through Sept. 28th.

Donation forms were also available at the on-campus blood drives, organized by the Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity.

In addition, APO donated all proceeds from its regular bake sale in Red Square to the Red Cross. According to members, over $100 was donated to the relief fund.

“This says a lot about the entire Georgetown community,” Villar said. “Not just the credit union, but other student groups as well.”

According to GUSA Vice President Brian Walsh (COL ’02), the Corp raised over $2000 through customer donations as well.

Donation containers were placed by the registers in Vital Vittles and Uncommon Grounds for a week after the Sept. 11 attacks.

From Sept. 12th to 14th GUSA accepted donations at each of its four information tables located in Red Square, by New South, Healy Gates and the Leavey Center also.

In addition to having donation boxes, the tables provided passersby with handouts about the university services available for students in the wake of the attacks.

The GUSA table at SAC Fair on Sept. 15th also collected donations, bringing the total collected by GUSA to $5000.

“We didn’t just have people putting in dollar bills,” Walsh said. “We had $20s and we had people writing checks.”

According to Walsh, $2825.52 was collected in the first 7 hours. “People were digging deep and giving a lot.”

Club sports teams collected about $500 through Late Night at Yates basketball games, Walsh said.

The Jewish Student Association and the Muslim Student Association also donated money to attack victims through the credit union.

They also collected contributions at a “collect a tree” table in Red Square.
