GU Rolls on Three-Game Win Streak

The Georgetown men’s lacrosse team rebounded from a 6-2 deficit midway through the second quarter to notch its third victory of 2005, a 9-8 decision, Wednesday night at Delaware.

Much like they did against Syracuse last weekend, the Hoyas scored late in the closing seconds of the third quarter to start a late-game run that ultimately led to the win.

A shot by junior midfielder Pete Cannon found the back of the net with six seconds to play in the third, tying the game at 7-7. Sophomore mid Garrett Wilson added another goal off an assist from freshman Scott Kahoe less than three minutes later to give Georgetown its first lead since the first quarter.

Freshman attack Matt McBride, who had two scores on the night, tallied his second with 4:24 remaining in the match to give the Hoyas a 9-7 advantage. His insurance goal put the game away, ending a two-game Delaware (4-3, 0-0 Colonial) win streak.

Georgetown outshot Delaware 42-29, and recorded 41 groundballs to the Blue Hens’ 28. Senior faceoff midfielder Andy Corno did not do as well as usual on faceoffs, however, as Blue Hen sophomore Alex Smith won 11 of 20.

Senior goalie Rich D’Andrea recorded just seven saves compared to his counterpart, Delaware senior Chris Collins, who notched 13.

Senior midfielder Brice Queener got the Hoyas on the board first, beating Collins just 1:22 into the contest. But the Blue Hens answered with four straight scores, including one by freshman John Carrozza and another by senior Dave Powers, Delaware’s leading scorer, which came just nine seconds apart.

The Hoyas managed to punctuate the scoring spree with one goal by senior midfielder Dave Paolisso early in the second quarter, but the Blue Hens managed two more to take a 6-2 lead.

Georgetown rallied back for two goals before going into halftime, and the Hoyas returned from intermission for two more to tie the match at 6-6. Sophomore attack Trevor Casey sparked the team with a goal after only 14 seconds had elapsed in the second half.

Powers added his third score of the day, and his 17th on the season, before Georgetown rallied to win the game.

The No. 5 Hoyas (3-1, 1-0 ECAC) next visit league foe Hobart (4-0, 0-0) on Saturday. Georgetown will open its shortened 2005 home schedule on Saturday, Mar. 26, against No. 3 Duke (6-0, 1-0 ACC).

Georgetown faces off against No. 16 Hobart at 1 p.m.

Mar. 12: Hoyas 10, Syracuse 7

Moving up Syracuse to early in the season paid huge dividends for the Georgetown men’s lacrosse team, as the then-No. 11 Hoyas stole their first win from the Orange in six years with a 10-7 victory at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif.

Georgetown had lost eight straight to Syracuse dating back to 1999, when the Orange knocked off the Hoyas in the NCAA semifinals. Syracuse also derailed Georgetown’s championship hopes last season, beating the Hoyas with a last-second shot in the NCAA quarterfinals en route to winning the national title.

But a 4-0 Hoya run late in the game relegated those defeats to the distant past, giving Georgetown seniors their first win over then-No. 5 Syracuse (1-2) in five tries.

The senior captains each played a part in the victory. Attack Nick Miaritis notched two goals, while defenseman Brodie Merrill tallied a game-high seven groundballs and caused four turnovers. After sitting out a Mar. 5 win over St. John’s, Corno rebounded from an ugly performance in the season opener, taking 13 of 19 faceoffs. D’Andrea performed well in the crease, posting 12 saves while allowing only seven goals.

The game’s most valuable player was sophomore attack Trevor Casey, who paced both teams with three goals, a game high. cBride added two scores and six groundballs in the win.

The Hoya defense held Syracuse junior attack Brian Crockett, who came in leading the Orange with seven goals on the year, to two scores despite his six shots on goal. Junior midfielder Greg Rommel and sophomore attack Steven Brooks each tacked on two goals to the Syracuse total.

The turning point of the contest came with two seconds to go in the third quarter. Out of a timeout, junior attack Sean Denihan fired past Syracuse senior goalie Jay Pfeifer, breaking a 6-6 tie and propelling Georgetown into a 4-0 run.

McBride netted his second goal of the day early in the closing stanza, and Casey and Miaritis added insurance scores to put the contest out of reach.

Georgetown and Syracuse have traditionally met on the final weekend of the regular season every year since 1998, but an invitation to the inaugural First Four, a showcase of men’s lacrosse national powerhouses in front of an Orange County, Calif., audience, required a schedule change. The Hoyas had only defeated the Orange twice before, in the second week of 1997 and at the end of the regular season in 1999.

Mar. 5: Hoyas 16, St. John’s 6

After beginning the year with a 13-6 loss to cross-town rival aryland, Georgetown came back in week two to defeat new conference rival St. John’s 16-6. The Hoyas jumped out to a 4-0 lead before the Red Storm (1-3, 0-1 ECAC) could retaliate.

Georgetown, up 8-3 at the half, went on another 4-0 run in the third quarter to secure its first victory of 2005 and improve its all-time record against St. John’s to 5-0.
