GU Slips Past Cuse for Win

The weather was below freezing in Syracuse, N.Y., but as the clock wound down inside the Carrier Dome, junior swingman Kate Carlin caught fire.

With 4:43 left in the game and a tenuous 47-44 lead to preserve, Carlin nailed a trio of three-pointers, back to back to back, within a minute and a half. The Hoyas went on to win, 58-51, adding another entry in the history book of the Georgetown-Syracuse rivalry.

The Hoyas (10-12, 3-8) opened the game with a 14-2 run over the first seven minutes. The Orange (9-13, 2-9) missed nine shots and turned the ball over six times during that sloppy spell. Syracuse ended up with 16 turnovers on the game to Georgetown’s nine.

The Orange used the rest of the half to chip away at the Hoyas’ lead. By intermission, the score was 30-28, Georgetown – a small lead, but an advantage to be sure. The Hoyas were 9-0 when they led at halftime.

Coming out of the locker room, a refreshed Syracuse team moved ahead of Georgetown, but the Orange lead never grew bigger than five as the two sides traded shots. At 8:48, sophomore guard Kristin Heidloff swiped the ball from junior forward Tracy Harbut and ran off on a fast break. Heidloff threw a pass to senior guard Bethany LeSueur, who dropped in the layup to cut the Syracuse lead to 41-40.

Two missed Syracuse jumpers later, Carlin drained a trey to put Georgetown ahead, 43-41. Orange freshman forward Brittany Smith evened the score with a layup, but at 6:19 sophomore forward Kieraah Marlow would sink a jumper to put the Hoyas back on top, 45-43. Georgetown hung on to its lead, thanks to those three Carlin threes, to finish with the victory.

Coming off the bench, Carlin led all scorers with 17 points on the game thanks to her precise three-point shooting. She went 5-for-6 from beyond the arc and 6-for-13 overall.

Freshman center Katrina Wheeler, usually a double-double threat, was held to four points, but she still pulled down 11 rebounds and blocked three shots.

The other Hoya freshman, guard Nikki Bozeman, had a tough night scoring as well, going without any points.

But LeSueur and Marlow, anchors of the offense, finished in double digits. LeSueur had 16 points, including an 8-for-9 mark from the free-throw line, plus five assists. Marlow, meanwhile, had 14 points and 14 boards.

On the Syracuse side, sophomore center Vaida Sipaviciute had 14 points and 12 rebounds as the Orange outrebounded the Hoyas, 47-43.

The win is the second straight for the Hoyas, while the Orange have dropped their last two. Georgetown and Syracuse went into the game tied for second-to-last place; now Georgetown is tied with Seton Hall for 13th place.

The Hoyas are just a few wins away from the Big East tournament, but their next two games, versus No. 17 DePaul and Marquette, will not make their pursuit easy. Although DePaul (19-5, 6-5) is on a three-game losing streak, two of those losses were to top-10 teams UConn and Rutgers.

The Blue Demons, who won the Conference USA title last year, have not had the same success since joining the Big East – they are currently in sixth place – but DePaul is still a formidable team. Its 78.3 scoring average is ninth in the country, higher than any other Big East team.

With no weekend game, the Hoyas have a full week to prepare for the Blue Demons. The teams square off at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday in cDonough Gymnasium.
