GU Teams Post Strong Showings in Sunshine State

The Georgetown men’s and women’s golf teams wrapped up their spring seasons last weekend with both squads competing in the Big East tournament in Florida. The men ended their season with a ninth-place finish, and the women earned medalist honors with a third-place showing.

The Hoya men and women took on the Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club in Dade City during the three-day, three-round championship. On day one, senior captain Tim Hager fired a 1-under 71, his best round of the spring season, to lead the Hoyas. Hager was followed by fellow senior Garrett Logan with a 2-over 74 and junior Vincenzo Salina with a 5-over 77. The freshmen duo of Taylor Hall and Brian Dorfman shot a pair of 8-over 80s, giving Georgetown a team score of 14-over 302 to leave them in ninth place at the end of the tournament’s first day.

After somewhat disappointing performances in the first round, the Hoyas made up ground on day two. All five of the Georgetown golfers posted impressive rounds and the team compiled their best team score of the spring, a 3-over 291 to move them up to seventh place. Salina tore up the course with a 1-under 71, followed by Logan and Hall with a pair of 73s, Hager with a 2-over 74, and Dorfman with a 4-over 76.

On day three, Dorfman seemed to finally get a handle on the tricky course layout, leading the team with a 1-over 73. Hager, Salina, and Hall all posted rounds of 3-over 75, and Logan rounded out the team score with a 5-over 77. The Hoyas’ combined team score came to a 10-over 298, moving them down in the standings to eighth place to finish the tournament, 44 strokes back of winner Louisville. Hager broke into the top ten in the individual standings, finishing in ninth place, and both Logan and Salina ended inside the top 25, placing 16th and 23rd, respectively.

The talented senior twosome of Carly Hunt and Chelsea Curtis led the ladies’ team on day one, shooting a pair of 2-over 74s. The team’s top freshmen, Eunae Joe and Joan Dulieu rounded out the Hoyas’ foursome, posting rounds of 7-over 79 and 9-over 81. Georgetown’s combined team score of 20-over 308 left the team in a tie for 5th at the end of day one.

Hunt again fired an impressive round in Monday’s second round, posting a 1-over 73. Curtis carded a 5-over 77, followed by Joe with a 79 and Dulieu with an 80. Junior Robyn English also posted an 8-over 80. Despite the somewhat disappointing performances on day two, the Hoyas moved up in the team standings to stand in fourth place going into the final round.

“The second round was really key for us,” women’s Head Coach Patty Post said. “We teed off early and were the only teams to beat the rain. They also lengthened the course in round two giving us an advantage, not because we are long hitters necessarily, but because we are so used to playing long golf courses.”

Both Hunt and Curtis finished out the tournament with a flourish, with each golfer firing one of her best rounds of the spring. Curtis led the way with an impressive 2-under 70, and Hunt posted an even-par 72. Joe followed the senior duo with a 5-over 77, and English contributed the Hoyas’ final score, a 10-over 82. The seniors’ strong rounds launched the team up in the standings to give the Hoyas a third place finish, 41 shots behind tournament winner Louisville. Hunt’s three solid rounds earned her medalist honors, as she placed in third with a three-day score of 3-over 219.

“I am sad to see the end of this season as I have some key players leaving the program,” Post said. “They will be tough to replace … not just because of golf but because of who they are and what they have meant to the program.”
