GUSA Assembly Meeting Discusses New Proposals

The GUSA Legislative Assembly outlined many of its upcoming initiatives, including possibly sponsoring an on-campus pub in order to bring students back onto campus during weekends.

One of the first points of business during the meeting addressed the so-called “one card,” a unified card which would combine an ID card with all of the other debit services including unch Money and printing debit cards. GUSA officials are now calling the card the “GO Card;” G for Georgetown, O for one. The assembly is also working to increase the number of locations that would accept the proposed card. The George Washington University employs a similar card called the “GWorld Card” which students can use to purchase meals, even off campus.

The Academic Affairs committee also presented plans to encourage professors to place their syllabi online so that students can see what a class will entail during the add/drop period. The university plans to eventually move to an online add/drop.

The committee also said they were beginning to work on starting more study abroad opportunities in Southeast Asia, citing a lack of programs in that area.

GUSA’s Diversity committee presented a proposal for an international talent show and possibly a Middle East discussion and panel in the wake of violence between Israelis and Palestinians.

Brian Walsh (COL ’02) and Jeff Burns (COL ’01) presented a new proposal to the assembly with that would essentially bring a pub back on campus. Georgetown used to have an on-campus bar called The Pub, which was closed several years ago. The group will be meeting with Vice President for Student Affairs Juan C. Gonzalez on Monday to discuss the initial proposal. Discussion centered around where the location of the event would be, with Bulldog Alley, Hoya’s and the Jesuit Residence after it is vacated, among the potential sites. Other issues of running the on-campus bar, centered on financial aspects as well as whether to admit those who are 18 and over or only 21 and over.

GUSA will be ending this week with a retreat after Midnight adness, scheduled for this evening.
