GUST Tacks Into First

While most Georgetown students were enjoying the final days of their spring break vacations, Georgetown’s sailing team went back to work, competing in four different regattas last weekend.

The co-ed squad was split among three regattas, as the Hoyas finished first out of eight teams at the Ice Free Regatta, second out of 10 teams at the St. Mary’s Team Race Intersectional, and 11th out of 18 teams at the Admiral Moore Regatta. The women’s team placed eighth out of a field of 15 teams at the Navy Spring Women’s Intersectional.

The Hoyas dominated the Ice Free Regatta, a two-on-two event held at Christopher Newport Sailing Center. The Georgetown team of junior Dan Esdorn, freshman Maddi Maguire, junior Todd Breeden, and freshman Emily Babbitt went undefeated, finishing 14-0.

At the St. Mary’s Team Race, hosted by St. Mary’s College of Maryland, the Hoyas held a record of 7-2 after the first day, one win behind first-place Hobart and William Smith. On the second day of the two-day round robin, the Hoyas climbed into first place, but a lack of wind ended the competition before the second round became official, and Georgetown finished second. Thirty-seven races were run, just eight races short of a complete round robin.

“We’re very happy about the way we sailed. The whole group sailed well together, especially on the second day. We’re not too worried about the finish,” Head Coach ike Callahan said of the Hoyas’ runner-up spot.

The Georgetown co-ed squad did not fare as well at the Admiral oore Regatta, which was hosted by SUNY Maritime College.

“The Admiral Moore was a weak event for us. There was not a lot of wind, so there weren’t many races. It was just a little disappointing,” Callahan said.

The Georgetown women’s team also struggled, finishing in the middle of the pack at the Navy Spring Women’s Intersectional, hosted by the U.S. Naval Academy. The Hoyas were led by senior Jackie Schmitz and freshman Sprague Brodie, who placed fifth with 82 points in 11 races.

“We did not sail well at all at the Navy regatta. Eighth place was disappointing because the competition wasn’t that good,” Callahan said.

According to Callahan, the women’s team has not been sailing up to their potential. The Hoyas finished third at last year’s national championships and were the pre-season favorites to win this year’s national title. The women’s team is currently ranked seventh in the country, according to the latest Sailing World College Rankings.

On the other hand, Callahan said he has been pleased with the co-ed team’s performance. “The co-ed team is in very good shape. The results have been very good,” Callahan said.

The co-ed team is ranked sixth nationally. The team will next compete at the Truxton Umstead Regatta at Navy this weekend.

The women’s team will also hit the water this weekend at the St. Mary’s Women’s Intersectional.
