Upperclassmen anxious to choose townhouses, apartments and Copley suites will have to wait another week, as the server controlling the online selection process crashed during Saturday’s draft.

The server malfunctioned at 9:32 a.m., after only 32 groups had the opportunity to select housing for the next academic year. Vice President for Facilities and Student Housing Karen Frank said she did not know the exact reason for the crash. “We believe [the server] is fixed, is being tested and we expect it to be resolved in time for Saturday’s selection,” she said.

Frank said this was the first time a server had crashed during housing selection since the university moved the selection process online during the 2003-2004 academic year. “I have no way of knowing” whether the crash could occur again, she said. “We do our best to keep everything running.”

Because of the delay, the deadline for filling empty apartment spaces and submitting occupancy agreements has been extended to 9 a.m. on Nov. 26.

The crash affected the weekend plans of many students who were scheduled to pick residences.

Brandon Brauer (MSB ’10) said he would have gone on time to the men’s basketball game against William & Mary – which began at noon – if he had known he would not have to choose housing. “My selection time was right during the basketball game, so I was mad I had to miss parts of it,” he said. “It wasn’t a big deal; I didn’t really think it really mattered.”

Catie Abrams (MSB ’10) said she thought the server crash was actually better for her selection group. “It was more beneficial for me because I was out of town, and this will give us another week to pick out what housing we want,” she said.

Nina Shi (SFS ’10) said she had to wake up earlier than she normally would on a Saturday to select her housing for next year. “I woke up at 9:30 because my selection time was at 10:32, and I wanted to wake up early just for sure,” she said. “My friends and I [got] together to select our housing, and it wasn’t working.”
