The youngest of Hoya varsity sports is women’s golf – a team that has been growing healthily, head coach Leland Beckel said, since its inception just two years ago.

A sure sign of this was an honor Beckel received from her fellow conference coaches at the end of last season: Big East Women’s Golf Coach of the Year.

But men’s golf has also seen progress recently, as seniors like James Farrah and Nick Cook have led the team to strong finishes at various tournaments throughout the season – namely a fifth-place finish at the Navy Fall Invitational and a third-place finish at the Navy Spring Invitational.

Freshmen Tim Moynihan and Matt Busa will also contribute to a program that is growing ever more dominant among Big East opponents.

“Both [Moynihan] and [Busa] have had an enormous amount of tournament experience, which separates them from the average high school player,” men’s head coach Tommy Hunter said in February, shortly after having signed the two recruits.

As for the women, the team’s first tournament victory ever – which came last year at the Rutgers Invitational – has proven key for the program.

“It really sparked our confidence,” Beckel said. “We finally have a little experience under our belt.”

Important additions to the team include freshmen Maggie Ward, Claire Pogue and Rosalina Ascolani.

“They’re really excited about being at Georgetown,” Beckel said of her newcomers. “And they have a good work ethic.”

Sophomore Christy Larrimore, junior Connie Isler and sophomore Nicole Hayashi, who held the top three spots last year, are expected to retain those positions. Larrimore and Hayashi were honored as All-Conference Big East golfers following the conference championships, though the team finished fourth out of four schools.
