The Big East announced the appointment of Georgetown University President John J. DeGioia to the chair of the Big East Executive Committee Thursday.

The decision was made at the league’s annual President’s Meeting held in Philadelphia this week. The meeting marked the first time that all 16 chief executive officers of the new Big East have officially assembled since the league’s expansion in July.

Also serving on the committee will be David C. Hardesty of West Virginia University (as vice chair), Dr. Judy Genshaft of the University of South Florida, Rev. John I. Jenkins, C.S.C., of the University of Notre Dame, Rev. Robert A. Wild, S.J., of Marquette University and Mark Nordenberg of the University of Pittsburgh.

The committee expanded to six members with the growth of the league.

At the meeting, the Big East also decided to extend Commissioner ichael Tranghese’s contract through the 2009-10 academic year.
