Men’s Varsity Crew

Georgetown named Evans Liolin as men’s varsity lightweight crew coach on Wednesday. Liolin comes to the Hilltop with international and collegiate coaching experience with the U.S. Junior National Team, the U.S. Rowing Lightweight Development Camp, as well as at Yale, Northeastern and Chicago.

Under Liolin’s leadership, slumping teams that had not won regattas for several years brought home key victories. Even at the beginning of his career as the men’s head coach at the University of Chicago Liolin’s squads improved, winning regattas for the first time in five years. Last year, he led the Yale freshman heavyweight crew team to its first victory in the traditional Havard-Yale Regatta since 2000. In 2004, he led the team to a bronze medal in the Intercollegiate Rowing Association National Championship, its best performance in that race in seven years.

Women’s Lacrosse

Women’s lacrosse Head Coach Ricky Fried was named an assistant coach for the 2007 U.S. Women’s Elite Team, it was announced Thursday. In his first appointment to the team, Fried will work under Head Coach Sue Heether to help bring the team closer to the 2009 World Cup in the Czech Republic. In a press release, Heether said, “Ricky is always thinking outside the box, so he brings a dynamic outlook to the coaching staff . He has a knack for getting the most out of each and every one of his players.” Fried will begin his work with the Elite team in a practice on Dec. 9-10 before it faces several collegiate teams in January. Fried joins one of his assistants at Georgetown, Michi Ellers (COL ’04), who plays defense for the Elite Team.
