Hoya Notebook: Crew

As the fall rowing season nears completion, the freshman and novice crews earned the spotlight last weekend, competing in the Freshman Scrimmage in Charlottesville, Va.

Held by the University of Virginia on the Rivianna Resevoir, the competition saw the Hoyas grab two top spots in preliminary results. The Heavyweight A boat finished the 4,000-meter course in 13:49, and the Lightweight A boat clocked in 12 seconds later. George Washington A earned the third spot at 14:11, and the Virginia B boat rounded out the top four places in the nine-boat race.

“All of the Georgetown boats rowed technically really well for the stage of their careers,” Men’s Heavyweight Novice Coach Marc Mandel said. “They’ve only been rowing for about two months. I thought they rowed well beyond their experience.”

Results for the women’s competition were not available.

Both the men and the women will compete at the Belly of the Carnegie in Princeton, N.J., this weekend.
