Hoya Notebook: Crew

One of the Georgetown men’s lightweight crews finished at the top of the heap at Saturday’s Head of the Potomac regatta, and a bevy of other strong results ensured a fine start to the rowers’ fall season.

Georgetown submitted five men’s entries to the open eight race, and the four heavyweight and lightweight crews that followed filled the fourth through seventh spots. The first-place team, Georgetown B, crossed the line with a time of 13:56.4, more than 10 seconds ahead of the crews from Georgetown and Potomac boat clubs, which finished second and third.

The Hoyas also took first – and second and third – in the men’s four with cox. Their top time was 17:17.3, courtesy of the Georgetown A heavyweights. The eight other competing crews included entries from Capital Rowing Club and Potomac Boat Club.

Georgetown’s clustered finishes continued for the women. In the open eight, Hoya teams finished third, fifth, sixth and seventh in a field of eight, while the women’s four-with crews took second and third in an 11-team field.

The third-place open eight finish was not apparent until the end, as Georgetown seemed to have the second slot secured for much of the race, albeit behind a 36-second Navy lead. But the team from Thompson’s Boat Club prevailed by a 0.6-second margin.

Next on the Hoyas’ schedule is the Head of the Charles, held in Boston on Oct. 22-23. The regatta features competitors from Harvard, Yale and Navy.
