The Hoya

Hoya Notebook: Field Hockey

In North Carolina last Saturday, the Hoyas pushed a game into overtime for the third time this season, but the Davidson Wildcats pulled out the win.

In the first four minutes of extra play, the Wildcats worked quickly, scoring their third goal of the game to finish off the Hoyas, 3-2. With the loss, Georgetown field hockey dropped to 3-8 on the season, while Davidson improved to 3-7.

Davidson sophomore forward Misty Stallings hit the net in the 16th minute to give the Wildcats an early edge. The Hoyas wasted no time in retaliating, and senior defender Tara Mead tied the game up just three minutes later.

Davidson held the offensive advantage, outshooting Georgetown 9-5 in the first half, resulting in a second Wildcat goal at the end of the first half. Freshman midfielder Britti Himelfarb scored the game’s first two goals to lead Davidson into the half 2-1.

The second half saw only one goal scored on either side, when Georgetown sophomore defender Lauren Sheets connected with freshman forward Maggie Farrand to even the score, 2-2, and push the game into overtime. It was Farrand’s fifth goal of the season, making her more productive this fall than any other rookie addition to the team.

The Wildcats needed only four minutes of overtime before Himelfarb squeaked past Hoya junior goalkeeper Abby Winer to score unassisted and put Davidson atop the final tally, 3-2. The defeat marks the second of three overtime games that Georgetown has lost this season.

The Hoyas were scheduled to play Appalachian State on Sunday afternoon, but the game was cancelled in memory of Appalachian State sophomore Julie Nagel, who died Saturday morning from injuries sustained during a car accident. Georgetown’s Wednesday game against UMBC was postponed until October 26, at 3:30 p.m.

Georgetown will play James Madison Sunday at 1 p.m. on Kehoe Field.
