Hoyas Dominate in Victory at Georgetown Classic Tourney

The Georgetown volleyball team won the Georgetown Classic at McDonough Gymnasium this weekend, after little challenge from an overmatched Maryland-Baltimore County squad in Georgetown’s 3-0 sweep. The Hoyas had previously swept Florida Atlantic, but were pushed to five games against Pennsylvania before winning that contest as well.

The Hoyas headed into this past weekend with a bit of concern for the season ahead. The team was 6-5 and looking to improve before the Big East season begins next month. What a difference a home tournament makes.

Three Hoyas were honored for their sizzling play. Senior middle blocker Meg Troller took home most valuable player honors for her great play up front. She was joined by fellow senior middle blocker Kaili Stevens and team captain senior outside hitter Kiran Gill for All-Tournament Team honors. Gill has received honors in every tournament this season.

Friday night’s opener saw Georgetown face Florida Atlantic. The Lady Owls had 15 kills while committing 15 errors, leaving their hitting percentage at .000. With 12 kills, 11 digs and a .429 hitting percentage, junior outside hitter Yulia Vtyurina led the way in the Hoya sweep. Georgetown dominated Florida Atlantic, winning 15-6, 15-4 and 15-3.

The next match pitted the Hoyas against Pennsylvania. This was the first big match for Troller, who hit .417 to go along with 20 kills. The freshmen trio of setter Jennifer Ward, middle blocker Laura Hart and outside hitter Molly Healy was prominent in the match. All three went the distance with huge performances. Ward proved she is the number-one setter with a career-high of 66 assists. Hart came into her own with 21 digs, second only to Gill, who finished with 24. Healy was all over the court and finished with eight digs.

Perhaps it was the fact that Georgetown had a such a young lineup that enabled the Quakers to challenge the Hoyas and force Georgetown into a fifth game. Once the young Georgetown players got used to playing in a close game, the outcome was set. Penn was held to -.200 hitting in the last game. The Hoyas rumbled their way to a 15-7, 12-15, 15-7, 13-15, 15-8 victory.

The final game would see the Hoyas play Maryland-Baltimore County. The best the Retrievers could muster was a miniscule .103 hitting percentage in the second game as they were on their way to a -.045 embarrassment. Vtyurina and Gill tied with nine kills with Yulia, hitting .538 for the match. The final score was in favor of the Hoyas: 15-4, 15-5, 15-3. With these victories, Georgetown moved to 9-5 on the season.

“It boosted our confidence,” Stevens said of the tournament. “Now maybe we can get a home winning streak going.”

Georgetown begins its Big East season this weekend on the road against Syracuse and Notre Dame. But with everyone playing as a team, Stevens is sure the Hoyas will be ready.
