Hoyas Down Midshipmen

Charles Nailen/The Hoya Georgetown had a slow scoring day on Sunday but squeaked away with a 4-3 overtime win over Navy.

There might be a pattern developing, and if there is, the Georgetown men’s lacrosse team probably would not mind seeing it continue.

For the second week in a row, the Hoyas were taken to overtime and for the second week in a row, they prevailed. Senior midfielder Trevor Walker scored two minutes and 40 seconds into the first sudden-death overtime period to give No. 3 Georgetown a 4-3 victory over its East Coast Athletic Conference rival, No. 16 Navy before a crowd of 879 people at a cold rain-soaked Rip Miller Field on the grounds of the U.S. Naval academy in Annapolis, Md. With the win, Georgetown improved to 6-0 overall in 2003 and 3-0 in the ECAC. Navy fell to 4-4 overall and 0-3 in the ECAC.

Just last Sunday, senior attack Jordan Vettoretti scored at almost the same point in overtime to give the Hoyas a 6-5 win over No. 10 Duke.

With neither squad able to mount much of an offensive attack, the defenses dominated the game. The Georgetown defensive unit was up to the challenge once again. The three goals scored by the idshipmen was the lowest total for any Georgetown opponent since Georgetown crushed Villanova 19-2 in 1998. No team has scored in double figures on the Hoyas this season, with Penn State’s nine goals in the Hoyas’ 11-9 victory on March 8 being the most goals allowed by the Georgetown defense in 2003. Conversely, the four goals scored was the lowest total of the season for the Hoyas and the lowest since an 11-4 loss to the Midshipmen two years ago. That loss snapped an undefeated season for Georgetown, a fate it narrowly avoided this time around.

Georgetown dominated virtually all of the statistical categories Sunday. The Hoyas outshot Navy 32-18 and sophomore midfielder Andy Corno won seven of 11 faceoffs. The Hoyas picked up 45 ground balls compared to 29 for the Midshipmen. Senior attackman Mike Hammer led Georgetown with six ground balls while senior defenseman Pat Collins, junior defenseman Andrew Braziel and sophomore defenseman Brodie Merrill picked up four ground balls each. Georgetown sophomore goalie Rich D’Andrea made six saves and Navy sophomore goalie Seth DiNola stopped 10 shots.

Despite their statistical dominance, the Hoyas were never able to build a significant lead Sunday. Navy freshman attackman Ian Dingman opened the scoring late in the first quarter but Walker answered for the Hoyas just minutes later to tie the score 1-1 after the first period. Junior attackman Mike Boynton scored the only goal for either team in the second quarter to put the Hoyas on top 2-1 at halftime.

Little changed in the second half, as the game remained a defensive struggle with goals very hard to come by for both squads. Navy tied the score 2-2 early in the third quarter and it remained that way through the rest of third quarter and most of the fourth.

Then, with 3:42 remaining in the game, graduate student attackman Phil Vincenti score what looked like it could be the game-winning goal off a pass from Mike Hammer. But the Midshipmen were not done yet. With just 1:29 left to play, freshman attackman Jon Birsner scored to tie the game and send it to overtime.

The Hoyas return to action this Saturday, April 5, when they travel to Providence, R.I. to meet Brown.
