Hoyas Grab Top Spots Over Weekend

In addition to earning second place at the sloops national championship, the Georgetown sailing team posted top finishes in three other regattas last weekend.

The Hoyas were the runners-up at the War Memorial regatta, which serves as the MAISA conference championship, in Norfolk, Va. St. ary’s, whose co-ed team is ranked seventh nationally, won with 109 overall points, while No. 6 Georgetown finished with 137. Fourteen rounds were completed over the weekend.

The second-place finish was impressive for Georgetown considering that its top sailor, senior Andrew Campbell, was at sloops that weekend, and that the team has never finished higher than second at the War Memorial regatta.

In the A division, the Hoyas finished in third place with 63 points. Sophomore Chris Behm served as the skipper, and seniors Nick Deane and Kyle Bergeron each spent time at crew.

Georgetown finished in fourth in the B division with 74 points. Senior skipper Ed Du Moulin raced with three different crews: junior Langdon Mitchell, junior Dan Monico and sophomore Leigh Fogwell.

The event holds a lot of importance because the results from it and the America’s Trophy decide the rankings for next year’s schedule. Since Georgetown finished fourth in the America’s Trophy last spring, the Hoyas will have the third-best schedule. This year, Georgetown had the fourth-best.

“The higher your schedule, the better quality regattas you’ll get in,” Callahan said. “That’s important for our team that we get in these good events.”

The top eight finishers at the War Memorial regatta qualify for the Atlantic Coast Championships, which will be held Nov. 12-13.

Georgetown’s co-ed team played host to the Luce Trophy last weekend as well. Although the Hoyas initially won the regatta with 72 points, they had to retire three races after finishing. Georgetown’s overall score inflated to 146 points, dropping the team to fourth place.

Queen’s ended up winning the regatta with 80 points.

If it had not been for the score change, the A team would have won its division with 15 points – 29 ahead of second-place Villanova. Junior skipper Todd Breeden and sophomore crew Zander Farkas posted the solid performance. Even after having to add 45 points to their score, Breeden and Farkas finished in second place.

In the B division, senior skipper Trey Lord sailed with two freshman crews, Andi Bailey and Brooke Crawford. They initially finished in fourth place with 57 points but had to add 29 points to their score, putting them in seventh.

The No. 7 Georgetown women’s sailing team also saw action last weekend, winning the Princeton Women’s Fall Open with 22 overall points. The Hoyas won both divisions in the one-day event, which was attended by four schools.

The A division pair of sophomore Philippa Fraumeni and freshman Emily Babbitt finished with 12 points while senior skipper Clare Starshak and freshman Laurel Korb had 10 points in the B division. Eight races were completed in each division.

The women’s team will compete in the MAISA fall championship this weekend in Throgs Neck, N.Y. The co-ed team will be idle this weekend.
