Hoyas Meet Success on Road

For both Georgetown past and Georgetown present, last weekend was a good one.

Three Hoyas traveled last weekend to the New Balance NYU Fastrack Invitational at the NYC Armory, in a meet highlighted by senior Fleet Hower who won the 5,000-meter race in an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 14:08.31.

Not to be outdone, senior (but college-ineligible) Chris Lukezic and ’04 grad Treniere Clement encountered success of their own just miles up the coast in Boston, M.A.

“There was no competition or excitement, so for him to run 14:08 is great in those conditions,” Assistant Coach Pat Henner said, “Fleet’s at a point where he’s running consistently well.”

Senior Jesse Patterson also competed, finishing third in the long jump with a leap of 22-feet-.5. Sophomore Michael Billington was the last member of the Georgetown track and field team to run. He finished eighth in the 800m race in a time of 1:57.38.

Georgetown alumni are also making waves in the professional track and field world.

Lukezic, who gave up his last year of eligibility to turn pro with Reebok, became the U.S. champion in the 1500m this weekend. He won the race at the 2006 USA Indoor Track and Field championships in a time of 3:41.84. Lukezic blasted past pre-race favorite Jason Lunn and won by one-tenth of a second.

“Chris ran a very smart race and had a great finish to win,” Henner said.

Clement, former Georgetown Track and Field standout and 2004 graduate, captured the 1500m final as well to become the women’s U.S. champion. Clement, who won the 2005 outdoor championship as well, blasted past rival Tiffany McWilliams to win by over a second in a personal-best time of 4:08.13.

Both Lukezic and Clement qualify to represent the United States at the 2006 IAAF World Championships on March 10-12 in Moscow.

“Having all these former Hoyas qualify for Worlds in oscow shows the high level at Georgetown and how well Hoyas run after leaving Georgetown,” Henner said.

Meanwhile, the Hoyas will participate in the IC4A championships arch 4-5.
