Hoyas Predicted to Finish Fifth

The Georgetown women’s basketball team was picked to finish fifth in the Big East in the preseason coaches poll, receiving 100 points to tie Virginia Tech.

The only individual honors awarded to Georgetown went to senior guard Katie Smrcka-Duffy, who was selected to the preseason All-Big East second team. Smrcka-Duffy, who averaged 18.6 points and 5.8 rebounds per game last season, was chosen along with Rutgers’ Tammy Sutton-Brown, Becky Gottstein of BC and Notre Dame’s Niele Ivey and Alicia Ratay.

The preseason All-Big East first team, consisted of Connecticut’s Svetlana Abrosimova, Sue Bird and Shea Ralph, as well as Rutgers’ Tasha Pointer and Notre Dame’s Ruth Riley.

Connecticut topped the polls with 169 points and 13 of 14 first-place votes. Rutgers (152), Notre Dame (150) and Boston College (129) rounded out the top four.

The Huskies’ Shea Ralph received preseason player of the year honors, while teammate Diana Taurasi was selected as preseason rookie of the year.

Georgetown will kick off its season on Nov. 6 in an exhibition game against EOS Malvas-Sweden at 8 p.m. in McDonough Gym.
