Hoyas Take Tenth in Intercollegiate

The Georgetown men’s golf team is hungry for a win.

As the team prepares for its season finale at the Big East championships this weekend at Norte Dame, they are using their season as fuel for their fire.

“All in all it’s been a good year. It hasn’t been a great year, but we’re hoping for a great weekend to make it a great year,” Head Coach Thomas Hunter said. “We’ve put a lot of time and effort into hopefully playing well this week. . Although we have been playing inconsistent golf, we are excited and will put our best foot forward this weekend.”

The “inconsistent” year was punctuated by a season-high fourth-place team finish of a field of 13 in the fall at the Big 5 classic in Philadelphia, Pa., on Oct. 18. But in their last three tournaments Georgetown has finished tenth, tenth and eleventh.

The Hoyas finished out the regular season last weekend with a 10th place finish at the First Energy Intercollegiate at the Firestone Golf Club in Akron, Ohio. Georgetown shot a combined 914 over three rounds of play. The University of Toledo won the event.

“We weren’t happy with 10th place. We thought we could get close to top five,” Hunter said. “We just played mediocre golf. We didn’t play good golf. That’s what we need to do this weekend.”

Sophomore Tim Moynihan led the Hoyas with a three-round 223 (77-70-76) to tie him for 10th place overall, with juniors David Erickson and Matt Myers following seven and eight strokes behind, respectively. Erickson shot a 230 (80-73-77) to tie for 40th, and yers came fell one behind with a 231 (73-82-76) to tie for 43rd. Freshman David Praet and senior Bob Molina finished out the Hoyas with Praet shooting a 238 (77-77-84) and Molina a 251 (93-81-77). Both finished in the top 75.

The composition of this year’s team differs from years past. Last year’s team – a team that garnered a third-place finish in the Big East championship and went on to the NCAA tournament – had the same set of players compete for the majority of the tournaments. “It was a stoic five; we didn’t have a lot of juggling. This year we have had that,” Hunter said.

Captains Myers and Erickson, as well as Moynihan, have consistently contributed to the Hoya team. “They’ve been the cornerstone of the team throughout the entire year,” Hunter said.

As for Moynihan, Hunter said, “We’re going to ride his coattails. His game is certainly suited for the golf course.”

To round out the Hoya five this weekend, Praet and sophomore att Busa will compete.

Georgetown heads into the Big East tournament as the No. 3 seed, behind No. 1 Notre Dame and No. 2 Rutgers. The winner will win an automatic bid to the NCAA championships. The first round of the tournament begins on Saturday morning at Warren Golf Course in South Bend, Ind.
