Hoyas Win at Storm Trysail

Sailing an Express 37 named Lora Ann, Georgetown placed first out of a field of 10 teams last weekend in the Storm Trysail Club’s 2003 Intercollegiate Regatta.

The Hoyas overcame the blustery conditions in the Long Island Sound off the coast of Kings Point, N.Y. They scored just 15 points, edging out the U.S. Naval Academy, which earned 18 points. Georgetown also beat out last year’s champion, the University of Michigan. Michigan finished the regatta in third place with 24 points.

The Hoyas were runners-up in the nine-boat race last year.

The Columbus Day weekend festivities included seven races total – four on Saturday and three on Sunday. Each race was between four and six miles long.

All of the schools except the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and the State University of New York Maritime College competed in boats owned by members of the Storm Trysail Club.

Sailors from Georgetown competed at other events over the long weekend. The Hoyas were victorious at the 2003 Hanbury in Newport News, Va., as they defeated seven other teams from various schools in Virginia and Maryland. Georgetown garnered second place at the Hap Moore Team Race Trophy, winning a tiebreaker over Harvard. It also placed seventh out of 17 teams at the Navy Fall Women’s.
