The Georgetown track and field team enjoyed a handful of successful performances this weekend as half the team traveled to the Maryland Invitational held at the Prince George’s Sports and Learning Complex in Landover, Md.

The Hoyas were led by four first-place wins and nine top-four performances. Junior Kandance Ferguson showed range as she stepped out of her normal sprint distance up to the 800-meter event. She won the race in a time of 2:16.29, which qualifies her for the Big East Championships. Ferguson was also part of the winning 4x400m relay team, made up of sophomore Ashley Hubbard, junior Nichole Torpey and freshman Buky Bamigboye, who clocked a season-best 3:47.73.

“Kandance did exactly what I needed her to do,” Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Ron Helmer said. “By qualifying in every event from the 60m dash to the 800m, she’s shown that she’s going to be a great quarter miler.”

Junior jumper Ashley Mondie won the triple jump with a leap of 38 feet, 11.5 inches while placing fourth in the long jump with an 18-foot, .25-inch effort. Hubbard notched an ECAC qualifying time in the 400m dash as she was the second collegiate finisher in a time of 57.21 seconds.

Freshman Khyle Osborne added depth to the team’s performance with his win in the shot put as he posted a 49-foot, 8.5-inch throw. This effort qualified him to compete at the Big East Championships.

Freshman Kenny Mitchell finished fourth in the 60m dash with a time of 6.98 seconds (6.95 in the prelims) while another freshman earned a trip to the Big East meet with a 44-foot, 9-inch leap in the triple jump.

“I was happy to see two more freshmen get their Big East qualifying marks, and for Khyle it was his first meet actually,” Helmer said.

Next week looks to be a big weekend for the Hoyas as the squad prepares to split between the Terrier Classic in Boston and the National Open at Penn State University. Several runners and jumpers will also compete at the George Mason Invitational.
