Rev. Edward Paul Betowski, S.J. (C ’36), former student and professor at Georgetown died Monday, March 11 at age 86 in Las Cruces, N.M.

Betowski graduated from Georgetown in 1936 and taught courses in ethics and moral theology from 1950 to 1967.

“He had a sunny disposition,” Rev. Joseph Durkin, S.J., said. Friends remembered Betowski as “very cheerful.”

A vigil was held in memory of Betowski in White Sands, N.M. on Friday, March 15. A funeral Mass was held the following morning. Betowski was laid to rest in the Georgetown University Cemetery following a memorial service in the Jesuit Community Chapel yesterday morning.

Born May 18, 1915, Betowski grew up in Sayre, Pa. and Waverly, N.Y. He became a member of the Society of Jesus in 1937, one year after earning his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Georgetown. He was ordained as a Catholic priest in 1949.

After teaching at Georgetown, Betowski became an administrator at Loyola College in Maryland before moving to White Sands, N.M. where he served as chaplain for the White Sands Missile Range until his hospitalization on Dec. 28.

Friends recalled positive memories of the former member of the Georgetown community. “He was a reckless driver,” Durkin said. “We would always tease him about his driving.”
