Lepgold Memorial Services Scheduled for Jan. 18

Memorial services in honor of Georgetown government professor Joseph Lepgold have been scheduled for Friday, Jan. 18 in Gaston Hall at 4 p.m. School of Foreign Service Dean Robert L. Gallucci said all students, faculty, staff and members of the Georgetown community are invited to join Lepgold’s family, neighbors and friends for services of reflection and remembrance.

“As many people as possible are highly encouraged to come. It’s important for us to show the family how important Joe was to us,” he said. Family funeral services for Lepgold and his son Jordan will be held Sunday, Jan. 13 in Brookfield, Wisc., just outside Milwaukee. “It has been an awful experience, [the family] is being spectacular about supporting each other,” Gallucci said.

The services will not be religious, but rather a community event to allow those who knew Lepgold to share their thoughts and memories.

Lepgold died in Paris at L’hopital Cochin on Dec. 4 as a result of injuries sustained in an electrical fire at the hotel in which he and his family were staying. Lepgold’s 11-year-old son, Jordan, died Nov. 26. His wife, Nicki Dean, remains in a coma at L’hopital Beaujon in Clichy, a suburb of Paris.

Lepgold’s family will fly in from California and Wisconsin to participate in the services at Georgetown, and middle school classmates of Jordan Lepgold may also attend. Several students, friends and faculty members are scheduled to share their memories of the Lepgold family at the services.

The university recently established the Lepgold Memorial Fund, with the intent of presenting an award at graduation to an undergraduate student who has proven to be outstanding in international security studies. They have also developed a national book award to be distributed by Georgetown in Lepgold’s honor. “These both go to the essence of Joe’s intellectual life: scholarship and teaching,” Gallucci said. Gallucci said significant donations have already been made and many more are expected.
