Mayor to Speak at Campus Meeting

Washington, D.C., Mayor Anthony Williams will attend Campaign Georgetown’s first meeting of the school year to discuss voting rights and political activism among youth, the group announced this week.

“He is planning on making a speech about youth voting, voter turnout and things related to Campaign Georgetown,” Campaign Georgetown Chair Matt Ingham (COL ’04) said. He said the mayor approached the group himself about attending the meeting.

Appointed by former mayor Marion Barry in 1995, Williams is serving his fourth term in a tenure that has seen the infusion of more than $2.5 billion to the District.

He is running for reelection as a write-in candidate this November.

“He heard through word of mouth there are a lot of registered student voters at Georgetown University,” Ingham said. “Given his current situation, he wants to get as many votes as possible.”

Ingham said Williams saw this as a positive opportunity to reach out to young voters before the election.

The meeting, which is open to the public, will take place at 9 p.m. in Copley Formal Lounge. Members of the Advisory Neighborhood Commission 2E board, including student commissioners Justin Wagner (COL ’03) and Justin Kopa (COL ’03) have been invited to attend. Wagner and Kopa complete their terms this fall and elections for their successors will take place in November.

Campaign Georgetown is a nonpartisan political organization dedicated to engaging students in the political process.
