Men Take Second, Women Fourth at Big East

When the Big East cross country championships came to a close Saturday at Van Cortland Park in the Bronx, both the Hoya men and women found themselves with a slew of impressive performances – and the exact same results they earned in last year’s competition.

The men’s team duplicated last year’s finish with a runner-up performance. Notre Dame, which placed its top five runners within the top nine, won the meet with 31 points. Placing six runners within the top 20, the Hoyas accumulated 51 points, while third-place Providence finished with 68.

“We’re in a position where we need move forward and take steps in the right direction,” said Ron Helmer, director of track and field and cross country. “As people mature and people work hard, we are going to be where we need to be at the end of the season.”

The Hoya performance was led by junior Matt DeBole and senior Fleet Hower, who finished third and fourth, respectively. Providence’s Martin Fagan won the race after running a collegiate course record of 23:48 for the 8K. Debole and Hower completed the course in respective times of 24:13 and 24:20.

Sophomore Dan Nunn was next in as he crossed the line in 13th place with a time of 24:59. The duo of senior Charles Millioen and junior Andre Laboy completed the top five scorers, as they finished in 15th (25:03) and 16th (15:11) places, respectively. Senior Tommy anning was close behind in 17th, crossing the line in 25:11.

Debole, Hower, Nunn and Millieon, the top four Hoya finishers, earned all-Big East honors with their top-15 finishes.

On the women’s side, the team duplicated last year’s Big East result with a fourth-place finish. The women finished with 107 points, just missing the third-place spot as Marquette tallied 105 points. Notre Dame won the women’s race with 34 points, as Providence finished second overall with 59. Villanova finished fifth, right behind the Hoyas with 113 points.

Junior Liz Maloy again led the team with a sixth-place finish and a time of 21:06. Sophomore Maggie Infeld, as usual, was right behind, garnering a 10th-place finish in 21:37. Both Maloy and Infeld earned all-Big East nominations for their top-15 performances.

Senior Erin Henry was the next Hoya to cross the line, riding a 22:16 time to 24th place.

The Hoyas’ next meet is the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships at Lehigh University on November 12. The women’s main competition will be Princeton and Villanova, the latter a recent six-point victim to Georgetown at the Big East Championships. The men will be looking to defend their title from last season.
