MSB Fills Entrepreneurial Studies Post

Jeff Reid has been named director of entrepreneurial studies in the McDonough School of Business. Reid will also lead the development of the MSB’s Real Estate Initiative.

Reid plans to develop strategic initiatives to advance entrepreneurial studies and real estate, aiming to move the MSB up the ranks of business schools, according to an MSB Media Relations press release.

“My goal is for Georgetown to be well-known as a place that develops, celebrates and embraces entrepreneurial thinking. Whether or not you want to start your own venture, it is likely that in your life you will need to think entrepreneurially,” Reid said. “You will need to recognize opportunities, embrace change, understand risk and be proactive.”

Reid said he also plans to develop courses and extra-curricular activities that involve students from all schools at the university, as well as advance the entrepreneurial spirit within Georgetown’s student body.

“I want Georgetown students from all degree programs and schools to have the opportunity to be inspired by great entrepreneurs, to learn the lessons of those who have gone before them, to get connected to people who can help them, and to actually create great companies and nonprofit organizations that will have a positive impact on the world around them.”

Reid said these programs could include competitions, mentorships and conferences as well as networking events, alumni programs and course development grants.

“There really is no shortage of opportunities, and what we build will be something that is special to Georgetown, that fits into the culture here of wanting to help others,” Reid said.

Before coming to Georgetown, Reid helped start and develop an entrepreneurship program at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill that was eventually ranked number-one in the world, according to Reid. He left his position as executive director for entrepreneurial studies at UNC for Washington, D.C., where he joined the management team of a start-up telecommunications company based in northern Virginia.

ost recently, he led a non-profit organization – the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship – which focused on teaching entrepreneurship to young people in inner-city high schools.

He became a member of the Georgetown faculty in August. Prior to his official appointment, he advised students who were interested in entrepreneurship. He also served as a judge for the Georgetown University Social Entrepreneurship Competition and as a coach for MBA students competing in the Venture Capital Investment Competition. During the past year, Reid served on the MSB’s Entrepreneurial Program advisory panel.

He holds an undergraduate degree from Appalachian State University and an MBA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

“I have always found great fulfillment in helping other people to pursue their dreams,” Reid said. “I am very excited about the opportunity to build a world-class entrepreneurship program at Georgetown.”

Reid said he believes that the potential for entrepreneurship at Georgetown is significant, especially because of its location in a region well-suited for innovation.

“Entrepreneurs create things,” Reid said. “I think we should support that. There are too many big problems in the world that have proven resistant to old-style solutions.”
