Orange Come Back to Nip Hoyas

Sometimes things just do not work out the way they should. This was certainly the case with the Georgetown men’s soccer team. Leading Syracuse 2-0 late in Saturday’s game, the Hoyas should have been on course for their first victory of the season. Instead, they found themselves on the short end of a 3-2 overtime final.

The first goal of the contest came nearly 15 minutes into the second half of play when freshman forward Benjamin Jefferson-Dow recovered a loose ball and fired it past the Syracuse keeper. Less than three minutes later, sophomore back Paul Brandley headed the ball into the net after recovering a shot saved by Syracuse.

With less than six minutes of play left and a two-goal lead, the Hoyas seemed to have the game in the palm of their hands. It was not to be, however, as Syracuse scored two unanswered goals in less than three minutes to climb back into the contest.

The momentum was more than Georgetown could handle. The Orangemen, playing on their home field and having just made an incredible last minute comeback, went into overtime with the proverbial wind at their backs.

Syracuse scored the game-winner in only the third minute of the sudden-death period. The Hoyas could only watch in disappointment as their hopes of the season’s first victory slipped away.

Senior goalkeeper Brian O’Hagan had seven saves in the game, compared with only three saves by Syracuse freshman keeper Alim Karim. The Hoyas were outshot 21-10, however. The two goals scored by Georgetown in the loss bring the team’s overall goal total to three goals in three games this season.

With the loss, Georgetown falls to 0-3-0 (0-1 Big East), while Syracuse picks up its first win for a record of 1-2-0 (1-0 Big East).

The Hoyas will look to recover from the tough loss and pick up a victory when they host Navy today at North Kehoe Field. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m. Navy is 3-1 so far this season. The Midshipmen lead the series with the Hoyas 8-1, including wins in two of the three games played at Georgetown.
