Savannah State Opens Women’s Schedule

No one can accuse the women’s basketball team of playing a non-conference schedule that’s too tough. The Hoyas play only two teams with a winning record from last year, not counting the possible matchups that Georgetown will face in the Ball State Tournament in a week.

Georgetown opens its season tomorrow with a match at Savannah State, whose men’s basketball team made headlines last year for going winless over its 28-game season.

Savannah State’s women’s team is not that much better. The Tigers posted the second-lowest RPI in the nation last year with a 6-22 record.

Savannah State Head Coach Cedric Baker has a roster made up entirely of freshmen and sophomores this year. Its top three scorers, led by guard Kemetris Hill’s 14.8 points per game, graduated, as well as its top two rebounders.

Sophomore center Shamice James returns with the most experience on this young team. Last year she played in every game, averaging 5.3 points and 5.8 rebounds. Sophomore guard Lakisha Green also saw playing time in each game, averaging 3.9 points.

Georgetown has its share of sophomore leadership, with forward Kieraah Marlow and guard Kristin Heidloff returning from successful rookie campaigns. Marlow, who earned a place on last year’s Big East all-freshman team, led the Hoyas in scoring and rebounds with 12.5 points and 8.6 boards per game. Heidloff, meanwhile, notched 6.1 points per game on the season.

Saturday’s game will be Georgetown’s first test with its eight-person roster. The matchup will be a learning experience as the Hoyas get accustomed to the rotation and the amounts of playing time that each player will have to put in regularly.

But before the Tigers meet the Hoyas, Savannah State will start its regular season schedule against NAIA opponent Voorhees College, Coach Baker’s alma mater, tonight at 7 p.m.

Georgetown and Savannah State tip off at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
