Seniors Bid Adieu With Win

The swimming and diving regular season ended on a mixed note for Georgetown’s men’s and women’s teams last weekend, earning one victory in four meets heading into postseason competition next week.

The men’s team lost to Drexel 157-86 in Philadelphia on Saturday and defeated Delaware 135-108 at Yates Field House in its season finale.

Senior swimmers Richard Dennis, Michael Weiss, Steven Brown and Brendan Daly all contributed to the Georgetown victory over Delaware. Dennis won the 200-yard breaststroke in 2 minutes, 14.32 seconds, and the team of Dennis, sophomore Bryan Evangelista, junior Will Miller and junior Chris Lengle won the 400-yard medley relay.

Weiss finished fifth in the 200-meter freestyle in 1:52.75 and placed sixth in the 500-yard freestyle, 5:09.30. Brown (2:16.46) placed third in the 200-yard breaststroke and Daly (2:19.65) finished fifth in the 200-yard butterfly.

“I didn’t expect for us to win,” Head Coach Bethany Bower said. “I thought they had a lot more depth than us, but everybody really pulled through for the seniors and we were able to finish out our last home game with a win.”

Other individual winners against Delaware included diver Mike Kizer in the one-meter (249.82 points) and three-meter (236.85), junior Chris Lengle in the 50-yard freestyle (21.77) and the 100-yard freestyle (47.64) and sophomore Ross Savedge (2:04.47) in the 200-yard butterfly.

Evangelista combined with freshman Shodai Enters,sophomore Jim cLaughlin and junior Matt O’Connor to earn a victory in the 400-yard freestyle relay for the Hoyas (7-4) in the meet’s final event.

“We really kept in focus the whole season,” Bower said. “In college, swimming is not just about the individual, it’s about the [team]. And the team really did well this year.”

The postseason begins next week at the Rutgers Invitational in Piscataway, N.J., on Feb. 10.

The women’s squad suffered a close 121-119 loss to Drexel on Saturday and lost to Delaware on Sunday, 147-96.

Against Drexel, the Hoyas (7-6) came two points away from victory. Sophomore Genna McKeel won the 200-yard freestyle (2:00.95), and took second in the 100-yard breast stroke (1:10.70). Sophomore Liz D’Auria (55.98) took first place in the 100-yard freestyle, and sophomore Lauren Moynihan (5:14.61) won the middle distance 500-yard freestyle.

In the distance races, three Hoyas swept the 1,000-yard freestyle with winning performances by freshman Erin Kehoe (10:51.10), junior Amanda Anderson (10:55.72) and sophomore Katie Hayes (11:11.65). Freshmen Julianna Bonilla and Kathryn Harrison finished 1-2 in both the one-meter and three-meter diving events.

“I loosened up too much, and I decided to give some of the swimmers who could have put us over the top a day off,” Bower said. “They really swam tremendously and did better than I expected them to in their times.”

At home against Delaware, Georgetown’s women’s team lost despite strong performances by several athletes. Sophomore Erin Lenahan won the 50-yard freestyle (25.44), and junior Caragh oynihan won the 100-yard freestyle competition (55.30). Freshman Kathryn Harrison posted victories in the one-meter (230.50) and three-meter (225.15) diving events. Georgetown’s relay teams in the 400-yard medley (4:12.06) and 400-yard freestyle (4:12.06) relays both placed second.

Both the men’s and women’s team will travel to the Rutgers Invitational in Pitscataway, N.J., this Saturday.
