Snapshot: Proudly Serving GU’s Student Association

As president of GUSA, Pravin Rajan (SFS ’07) says he is working to change the student association and make it more accessible to the student body. But while members of Georgetown’s community might know about his politics, fewer know of his fascination with Albert Einstein or his perpetual lack of sleep.

If your friends could describe you in one word, what would that be?

Probably “energetic.” I rarely sleep. I get excited about something and I will throw everything I have into it.

Whenever you feel hungry, where’s a nice place to eat out?

Usually I don’t have time to eat. I’ll run to Vittles and grab an Odwalla bar and maybe some bread and hummus, and that’s what keeps me alive.

If you could spend a day with any person, living or dead, who would it be?

Albert Einstein. His profound faith, his fascination for looking into those different connections between spirit things and drawing larger conclusions and just the fact that so much of his work and so much of his ideas and the power of his imagination, are compelling examples. I would love to spend a day just talking to him.

What is the most challenging aspect of being GUSA president?

Trying to kick-start an organization which hasn’t been as effective as it could have been in the last few years. We’ve been trying to restructure the organization. We’re taking on a lot of things that previously haven’t been in the scope of the GUSA administration, between trying to introduce a new housing policy, trying to deal with student-safety issues.

Is there any upcoming project you have a lot of hope for?

We’re working to extend double-swiping so that students can get into any building at any time for safety purposes, up until midnight. We’re also working to try to expand service opportunities for students, and working with health education services to bring more issues to light, especially of issues on sexual assault and the alcohol policy, like what we can do to help our friends.

You are a STIA major. Does that have anything to do with a fascination with science?

I came into the school as a bio-chemistry major. I got in the College, but before I accepted I transferred into SFS, because the student who hosted me was in the SFS, and he was a really cool person. I had a great time visiting this campus. I found this place was really special. It’s been an amazing major. It’s just been a blast.

After graduation, where do you see yourself?

I don’t really know. I hope that through my work I’ll be able to do something good and something worthwhile, but I can’t even begin to imagine yet.

Where would you have a birthday party, and who would you invite?

I’d probably just have it on the beach, with close friends.

What movie would you want to act in?

I’m a drama kid. . I think it’d be cool to act in “Lord of the Rings.” Just being in the movie would be cool. Me and a friend have this awfully dorky habit of sparring with wooden swords. It would be cool to test out our skills on the big screen.
