A male suspect entered the townhouse bedroom of a sleeping Georgetown senior Wednesday morning and woke the student before fleeing on foot.

According to a Metropolitan Police Department incident report, Kyle Pickering (MSB ’05) was asleep when the man entered the house on the 1400 block of 36th Street at 9:27 a.m. through an unlocked door.

Pickering said Thursday that the man woke him when he entered his upstairs bedroom.

“We all have singles and when my roommate left, he left the front door unlocked,” he said. “So this strange guy opened my door and I woke up.”

The man apologized for entering the house, closed the door, ran downstairs and out of the house, Pickering said. Pickering then called the Department of Public Safety who contacted MPD.

Nothing was taken during the incident and Pickering was unhurt.

The MPD report said that the suspect was last seen running eastbound on O Street and described him as a 5’6″ Hispanic male in his mid to late 20s.

David Morrell, vice president for university safety, said Thursday that DPS was investigating whether the incident was related to prior burglaries which have occurred on and near campus. He also urged students to lock their doors.

“Clearly criminals will target anyone and we have to start a campaign to get students to lock their doors at all times,” he said. “These criminals know when our students are most vulnerable so we want to be sure students are fully aware of the perils of not locking their doors.”
