A Chevrolet pickup truck caught fire in Parking Lot A next to Darnall Hall on Wednesday afternoon after its driver passed out at the wheel and collided with the front of a parked Mercedes SUV, damaging its passenger side and causing it to roll into a parked Ford Taurus. The driver, a man in his 50s, was pulled from his vehicle semiconscious and brought to the Georgetown University Hospital emergency room by GERMS, who was called to the scene of the accident. He was admitted to the hospital and is now listed in stable condition.

Laura Macrorie (COL ’06) and Jake Dedoyard (COL ’06) were leaving St. Mary’s Hall and witnessed the scene. Upon exiting the building, they heard someone call out to them.

“A guy yelled over to us, but we were kind of confused at first. We saw him reach inside [the truck] and shake the driver. He didn’t look conscious,” Macrorie said. “[The truck] was smoking, you could see underneath and see the flames coming down.”

Clouds of smoke from the burning gray truck billowed from the scene. Alan Etter, public information specialist for D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services said that a fire engine was dispatched to campus in response to a call at 2:22 p.m. and firefighters put out the flames with little trouble.

The Department of Public Safety responded to a call about a burning vehicle at 2:24 p.m.

According to Macrorie, the driver was pulled from the car and laid out next to the car for several minutes, then moved by a DPS officer and passers-by to the nearby sidewalk in front of the Student Health Center. The GERMS team examined the semiconscious driver for several minutes before loading him into the ambulance on a stretcher to transport him to the hospital.

According to the DPS report on the incident, no other injuries were reported and the scene was cleared by 2:50 p.m.
