Unbeaten Hoyas Off To 4-0 Start

The Georgetown women’s basketball team is certainly making the most of its non-conference schedule in the early season, getting off to a 4-0 start. The Hoyas have won consecutive games against Fairleigh Dickinson, Colgate, Rider and George Mason.

“Each game has been a development for us. And we are getting better, which is the important thing,” Head Coach Pat Knapp said.

The Hoyas opened the season with a 69-42 victory over a weak Fairleigh Dickinson squad. Sophomore center Rebekkah Brunson sat out the game because of a violation of an undisclosed NCAA and team rule, but junior forward Nok Duany stepped in to fill the void. She scored a game-high 18 points and had six rebounds. Foul trouble was a problem for the Hoyas; it forced them to switch to a zone defense which allowed Saints sophomore point guard Natallia Marchanka to frequently drive to the basket. She led the Saints with 17 points.

Freshman point guard Mary Lisicky gave a strong first performance for the Hoyas, with 16 points and six assists.

The Hoyas extended their winning streak as they traveled to take on the Red Raiders of Colgate. They had four players in double figures, as they worked their way to an 83-69 win. Senior guard Lesley Walker was the high-scorer this time with 18 points, 12 of which were scored on three-pointers. Duany had a double-double, scoring 16 and getting 11 boards. Lisicky and junior forward Zsuzsanna Horvath both had 11 points.

Georgetown was in control for most of the game, but Colgate had several threatening stretches. They went on a 15-6 run toward the beginning of the first half, getting the score to 16-15 with 10 minutes left before the break. The Hoyas came back and went into halftime with a 43-33 lead.

The Raiders came out firing and got within three points with 10 minutes to go in the game. Georgetown’s clutch shooting allowed the Hoyas to close it out, however, as they went on a 13-1 run.

Colgate out-rebounded the Hoyas 39-37 in the game.

“Well, I think, in a nutshell, the Colgate game was our first experience at going out of town, and I don’t think we defended very well,” Knapp said. “Having said that, there were enough fouls called that we would have blown them out had we made our foul shots.” The Hoyas shot only 50 percent from the line.

On Nov. 24, the Hoyas improved to 3-0 with a 77-64 win over Rider (0-4). Brunson scored 22 points in the game as well as adding 11 rebounds. Walker had 10 assists and 10 rebounds. Junior forward Zsuzanna Horvath chipped in off the bench, scoring 14 points. The Hoyas out-rebounded the Broncs 46-36.

“I thought we played a little better in that game,” Knapp said.

Georgetown had to defend against the Broncs’ outside shooting, as they took 30 three-pointers.

Senior guard Kathleen Kearon was 5-for-10 from beyond the arc. As a team, however, the Broncs’ field goal percentage was just 34 percent.

“We played a team that spread out pretty much,” Knapp said. “I was concerned about rebounding better and getting out and playing the three, and I think eventually we moved the ball well enough and got enough shots to get out and beat that team.”

The Hoyas were again victorious against George Mason (2-2) Wednesday night, as Brunson’s 23 points led the way to a 64-59 victory at the Patriot Center.
