The Georgetown men’s tennis team traveled to Richmond, Va. on Jan. 24-26 to participate in the Virginia Commonwealth University 4+1 Invitational. The Hoyas struggled throughout the course of the weekend, competing against Radford, James Madison, Old Dominion and Virginia Commonwealth.

The 4+1 format consists of four singles matches and one doubles match; each of the five matches counts for one point. The team with the most points at the end of the five games wins the contest

The Hoyas had their most successful meeting on Friday versus Radford, finishing 2-3. In doubles competition, freshman Ryan Peisel and junior Dennis Cravedi defeated Robel Mengisteab and Dominic Soeur of the Highlanders, 6-2, 6-3. In the singles matches, senior Marc Lohser pulled off the victory, overcoming Arthur Vasarevic, 7-6, 6-7 and 12-10 in the tie-breaking third set. Sophomore Eric Bildman, playing at the two spot, lost to Brandon Johnson, 6-1, 6-2. Senior Chris Belelieu also suffered defeat, falling to Andre Cavaco, 6-3, 6-2, while fellow Hoya senior Chris Kindler lost to Joakim Arhammar, 6-1, 6-3.

Georgetown faced James Madison University the following day, again winning its doubles match. Peisel and Bildman toppled Colin alcolm and Brian Knehr in two sets, 6-2, 6-2. The Hoyas lost all four singles matches, with Cravedi falling to Mike Hendricksen, 6-3, 7-6 and Lohser to John Janssen, 6-4, 6-1. At the three spot, senior Troy Crichlow was handed a 6-2, 6-2 loss by Craig Anderson, while freshman Eric Conrad, playing at the four spot, lost to John Snead, 6-3, 6-2.

The Hoyas faced even stiffer competition on Sunday, the final day of the tournament. They went 0-5 against Old Dominion, losing all five matches. Lohser and Bildman were defeated by Patrik Binkowski and Calin Milos, 6-3, 7-6. Following this loss, Cravedi and Peisel fell to Salman Mohammed and Niklas Oskarsson, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4. In singles competition, Conrad lost to Zoltan Csanadi, 6-4, 6-1, while Belelieu stumbled against Izak van der Merwe, 6-3, 6-2.

In its last match of the tournament, Georgetown continued its troubled play, losing four straight singles matches. Cravedi fell to Florian Marquardt, 6-0, 6-3, and Lohser lost to Marton Ott, 6-2, 6-3, at the two spot. Finally, Bildman folded to Daniel Casquero, 6-2, 6-2, while Peisel admitted defeat, 6-2, 6-2, against Mats Norin. The Hoyas did not play a doubles match against the Rams.

Next up, the Hoyas travel to the Annapolis Big Vanilla Racquet Club on Sat., Feb. 1 to challenge Navy at 5 p.m.
